Planting and Landscape Trees

A little ring of mulch does a lot.

Proper mulch holds water, cools roots and keeps mowers away from the trunk. Done wrong, it hides the root flare and rots the bark. Done right, it is the best thing you can do for a tree.

The overview

What it is, and why it matters.

Mulch is the cheapest way to improve a tree's life. A two- to four-inch layer spread wide and kept off the trunk holds moisture, moderates temperature, suppresses weeds and slowly feeds the soil. Mulch piled against the trunk, the volcano look, does the opposite.

Nashville Tree Service applies mulch, corrects overmulched trees and improves the root zone across Middle Tennessee. We pull mulch off the trunk, loosen compacted soil where needed and spread a clean, even layer wide enough to help the roots that are really there.

Why people choose it

Four things done right.

Healthier roots

Roots stay cooler and moister.

Less mowing damage

A mulch ring keeps mowers and trimmers off the trunk.

Fixes volcanoes

We pull mulch back and expose the root flare.

A tidy look

Clean edges and even depth.

Good questions

Mulching and Root-Zone Care: common questions

How much mulch should I use?

About two to four inches deep, spread out to the drip line if you can, and pulled back from the trunk.

Is mulch against the trunk really bad?

Yes. It holds moisture against bark, which can cause rot and invite pests.
